Here goes various tricks and tips for using firefox in Linux. I use firefox in both an i386 (i686) environment as well as in an x86_64 environment. My latest install of Fedora 9 was as an i386-environment because I too often would need applications that only works in i386 environments.

Firefox and Danske Netbank

This requires java (the official one). In the fedora 9 i386 version I installed the jre-6u7-linux-i586.bin and made a symbolic link as:

ln -s /usr/local/jre1.6.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/ /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I get the login-screen, but I can't get to type the security number from the Activ-card. By downgrading to an older version of java - namely the 5-series it actually works. This is the jre-1_5_0_15-linux-i586.bin which can be found at

ln -s /usr/local/jre1.5.0_15/plugin/i386/ns7/ /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

And voila - after restart of firefox 3 it works! Danske Bank says that the 6-version works - which it does in MS Windows.... but not in Linux.
